Do I need a sourcing agent?

Choosing the right supplier is not easy, especially in countries like China.

Visiting trade fairs to find suppliers is the first step, but not the only one. The image Chinese companies project at fairs is often far from reality.

Small companies with limited and poor production capacity —a future source of problems— show up at fairs with large stands in the best aisles. Meanwhile, more solvent and better-prepared companies, with consolidated clients, don't need big marketing campaigns and settle in more modest spots.

Knowing the factory is a non-negotiable requirement, even more so in recent years where Chinese companies disappear after the fair with the initial payment of orders.

Selecting suppliers is the first step. Many more remain:

    Price and payment terms negotiation

    The best price is not the lowest price. Products have value; knowing the cost of labour, materials and components, the supplier's structure, and competitor pricing are essential tools for negotiating fairly. A very low price is either fraud or extremely poor quality that won't meet European standards, and ends up costing more in returns and lost customers.

    Order tracking

    If your company already imports from China, you know this is just the start. You need to negotiate payment, track production, manage the information the Chinese supplier requires (references, packaging, modifications…) and the information you'll need from the manufacturer (certificates, tests, specs, photos…). Without tracking: delays, errors and defects.

    Avoiding customs and tax problems

    If you don't control the cargo, shipment and documentation, the trouble shows up at customs — followed by a tax sanction file.

    Avoiding fraud in China

    Companies that disappear, shipments with no goods, email accounts hijacked by hackers, payments diverted to fraudulent companies. Fraud cases have multiplied in recent years; we've been the target of many attempts and have always detected them in time.
